Yuzu Nintendo Switch Emulator Features Improved Resolution Scaling Function


The Nintendo Switch Yuzu emulator introduced the much-requested resolution scaling feature in its latest update for Early Access users. This feature will allow emulation enthusiasts to go beyond the limits of Switch hardware and take full advantage of the potential of Nintendo Switch games.

The new and significantly improved Resolution Scaler will be available in the latest versions of Yuzu Early Access. The Yuzu team warns, however, that the latest NVIDIA drivers are causing rendering issues with OpenGL. So make sure your system is using NVIDIA GeForce driver version 472.12 as this is the latest known version which did not cause any problems.

For those not in the know, the Resolution Scaler is a feature that allows … Then the game is rendered at the scaled resolution. This allows Switch games to be rendered at lower resolutions such as 720p / 900p. The new Yuzu Resolution Scaler, known as Project ART, uses a scoring system:

The meticulously designed scoring system works by having a set of rules dictating which render targets can be scaled and having a scoring for each texture. We couldn’t just use a “YES / NO” binary system because, unbeknownst to us, some games can render textures only once. Their scaling is unnecessary and has the potential to break them.

For the uninitiated, render targets are just textures the game is rendered on. Textures can only earn one credit per image. And to earn that 1 credit, the texture itself, as well as all other textures in this render pass, must all meet our set of rules. After accumulating 2 or more credits the texture will be scaled and now all rendering will be done in the scaled resolution for that texture.

Textures continue to gain more credits as the frames pass. But if in an image, even a single texture in a renderpass fails the rule set, all texture scores will be reset to 0. If a texture interacts with other textures, its re-rating will either be based on the current rating of these textures or will be increased to the maximum possible rating, if any of these textures are already scaled.

The feature works with most games. However, the development team has confirmed that currently two games are not upgradeable: Paper Mario: The Origami King and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. This is due to these games using a computational shader to render an image that has not yet been done natively. However, you can upgrade Paper Mario with the use of mods.
