The best weekend deals: Xbox Series X/S in stock, Samsung microSD cards, and more

Ars-Technica

It’s the weekend, which means it’s time for another Dealmaster. Our latest roundup of the web’s best tech deals is more of a PSA than an outright discount: if you’ve been interested in buying one of Microsoft’s latest game consoles, the Xbox Series X or Series S, it looks like you’ll finally be able to do this without having to rush to beat scalpers or keep a constant eye on stock trackers.

The more powerful Series X, for its part, has been in stock at Walmart for most of the past two weeks. There’s no discount on Microsoft’s $499 MSRP and you’ll need to sign in to a free Walmart account to checkout, but the process of getting the Series X now appears to be much more stable than it has only been for the past year and a half, during which time the console has usually sold out within minutes or not been available at all.

If Walmart’s supply runs out, Microsoft itself also has the Series X in stock, albeit in bundle form. This package includes the console, a second controller (one comes in the box), and one of the few games. The cheapest game option is the one recommended by Ars Assassin’s Creed Valhalla for $24, though the selection also includes the newly acclaimed RPG Ring of Elden at full price. If you were planning on picking up an extra gamepad and one of the available games anyway, this isn’t the most egregious bundle we’ve seen in recent months.

The Series S has been a bit easier to find lately, but now we’re starting to see some real deals for the device at select retailers. At the time of this writing, for example, Newegg will allow you to withdraw $30 from the console normally at $300 when you use the code “APRBRA338” at checkout.

We have already analyzed the differences between Series X and Series S, but in short, Series X is the more scalable of the two, offering a more powerful GPU, more memory and more storage space (1TB, against 512 GB in the S Series). If you have or are planning to buy a 4K TV and care about getting the highest graphics settings in your games, it should be worth the extra $200. The Series X also has a disc drive, so you’ll be able to grab used games, while the Series S can only play digital downloads.

That said, the Series S can play all the same games as the Series X, and while it’s not designed for high-end 4K gaming like the Series X (aiming for 1440p resolution instead), it still brings a marked step forward. in performance compared to the old Xbox One. It’s decidedly more compact hardware, too, and its lack of a disc drive doesn’t prevent it from pairing well with an Xbox Game Pass subscription, if you’re already paying for it. If you are looking for a secondary console or just a way to play Halo, Forzaand other Xbox games on a smaller screen, it’s good value for money.

There’s always a distinct possibility that these consoles will sell out as you read this, and unfortunately Sony’s PlayStation 5 supply still seems to be crippled by component shortages and the intense, pandemic-fueled demand that many gaming devices have encountered over the past couple of years. years. But if you’re sold on Xbox’s library of games and prefer using a console rather than a gaming PC, access to the latest generation of hardware seems to be getting easier.

If you don’t need a new console, our roundup also includes a new low price on the 512GB version of Samsung’s Evo Select microSD card, plus discounts on recommended USB-C chargers from Samsung. ‘Anker, board games, 8BitDo gamepads, LG OLED TVs, gaming monitors, and more.
