There has been a lot of talk lately about streaming giant Netflix expanding into video games with its popular service and now it has announced its very first developer acquisition.
So what is the business? It’s Night School Studio – known for its first game Without beef and also the next release Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, en route to all platforms, including Nintendo Switch.
In a statement, Netflix vice president of game development Mike Verdu said the company wanted to continue working with developers and hiring top talent to bring “exclusive games” to its members.
âWe will continue to work with developers around the world and hire the best talent in the industry to deliver a large collection of exclusive games designed for all types of gamers and all levels of play. Like our shows and movies, these games will all be included as part of your Netflix subscription – all with no ads or in-app purchases. Stay tuned for more. “
Night School founder Sean Krankel described the partnership as a ânatural twinningâ and mentioned how Netflix had done âthe utmost careâ to protect the studio’s culture and creative vision.
âNetflix offers film, television and now video game makers an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver great entertainment to millions of people. Our explorations of narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting various storytellers were such a natural pairing It was as if the two teams had come to this conclusion instinctively.
“It is a surreal honor to be the first game studio to join Netflix … The Netflix team has been extremely careful to protect our studio culture and our creative vision.”
