Steam Deck Benchmark shows 60 FPS games on games like DOOM and Cyberpunk 2077

Suddenly Valve unveiled its Steam Deck as one of the most interesting and portable gaming devices of recent times. It’s an exciting piece of hardware that will allow you to take your Steam games anywhere and play them on the go. A few selected users around the world have had a first glimpse of it. Studios started receiving dev kits for Steam Deck and were starting to see the the first benchmark tests appear. The latest piece comes from Ranger, who ran tests on different games on different settings to see if the device can hold up.

These benchmark tests were run on a Steam Deck development kit. Thus, the performance may be slightly different in the retail version of the device. In some cases, we even get better and more optimized performance. For those who don’t know, the Steam Deck has a custom AMD APU. It uses Zen 2 and RDNA 2 and brings them together on a single chip.

The Steam Deck provides stable gaming from 45 to 60 FPS depending on graphics settings

According to Tom’s Hardware, the tests were carried out on 4 different games. These titles are Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Doom, Cyberpunk 2077 and DOTA 2. The test was to run the game in different settings (High-Low-Custom) to see if the Steam Deck manages to achieve high frame rates.

Set the graphics of Shadow of the Tomb Raiders to the highest quality, resulting in a fairly stable 36 FPS. Note that it is already better than most of the last generation consoles. By reducing the preset a bit, the framerate immediately jumped to somewhere north of 60 FPS. Tests suggest there was virtually no stuttering when using the highest graphics preset available at @ 30 FPS.

Bethesda’s DOOM gives similar results with frame rates hovering around 60 FPS at medium settings. However, making a few changes to the present to improve the graphics, brought it down to 46 FPS, which is still amazing. After all, it’s a portable “console” running an AAA title. Since these demanding games were successful, DOTA 2’s performance was more than incredible with constant 80 FPS at its lowest and a respectable 47 FPS at its highest.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most interesting games tested on Steam Deck. The game is known for the multitude of issues it encounters in the latest generation consoles due to its hardware. On the highest presets, the Steam Deck ran the game between 20 and 30 fps. The experience was, according to the tests, quite smooth.

Battery life can be an issue

Note that the temperature of the console was around 42.6 ° C, while the handles were around 29 ° C. Unfortunately, the battery does not seem to hold up during long gaming sessions. The capacity increased from 100% to 46% after only 3 hours of play. This is of course still a development kit and not the version. final commercial, which means that some optimizations will be made to the device before its launch in December 2021. Of course, using quick calculations, the device would last at least 5 hours. and 30 minutes of play.
