The PlayStation 5 has been incredibly hard to find since its launch last November, and those who managed to buy the system are very happy to have it. Reddit user dogen_lives_in_glass was one of the lucky 10 million fans who managed to get one, but the system tragically stopped working when lightning struck their house. The user apparently has all of their devices plugged into surge protectors, but it appears that offered no assistance. Interestingly enough, dogen_lives_in_glass isn’t the only person this has happened to, as another poster also lost a PS5 that was plugged into a surge protector.
“FML … I was gone for a week and lightning struck my house, brick PS5. Don’t take your console for granted and enjoy today’s update everyone,” the Reddit post bed.
Because the system was completely blocked by the storm, the poster had to remove the plates to manually remove a game disc that was still inside the PS5. Before that, they tried using both a different power cable and a different outlet, but neither made a difference. Now dogen_lives_in_glass will have to see if Sony can replace or repair the console. Hopefully they will have a bit of luck in this regard!
The Reddit poster was not at home when the lightning struck. Interestingly enough, this was not the case last month when a player was struck by lightning through their console! In August, a man in Tennessee was shocked with a wired video game controller during a thunderstorm. However, it is not known which console the player was using at the time.
These stories could convince some gamers to unplug their consoles when they leave the house during thunderstorms or when they leave the house for an extended period of time. It could be the difference between a working system and a very expensive brick. Given how hard the PlayStation 5 is still to find, fans may want to do everything in their power to keep it safe; clearly, surge protectors are not enough!
