Patients roll up their sleeves to try their luck on Xbox consoles

Gerald Gray, of Jefferson City, was among the first to arrive at a COVID-19 vaccination clinic outside the Boys & Girls Club in Jefferson City on Wednesday afternoon.

The widely publicized event prompted people to get vaccinated.

Three people who were vaccinated against COVID-19 at the club will each receive an Xbox game console.

Everyone who received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at the clinic is eligible to win.

Console was a secondary consideration for Gray, whose entire family except her youngest child had contracted the respiratory virus about six weeks ago.

Gray said he had done a lot of research on vaccines, but remained hesitant to receive one because he was concerned about the long-term effects. However, the coronavirus had been tough on him. He spent a few hours in the emergency room.

Having a choice at the clinic on Wednesday, he opted for the Pfizer vaccine, which requires a second dose in four weeks.

“It was the first out. When it first came out the power was higher, ”said Gray.

He added that he feared vaccine makers Johnson & Johnson and Moderna had rushed to catch up.

“I had to do some research. I was not for it, ”he said. “There aren’t too many things in my life that put me down. This COVID shot me down. It blew me away. “

Gray said he felt like he was playing with his health – and that of his family – by not getting the vaccine.

“I’m not going to play anymore,” he continued. “I had it, and by the grace of God, I did.”

Only a few people showed up to the event in the club parking lot.

Names will be drawn and winners announced no later than October 8, sometime after the consoles arrive from the national association’s home offices.

Vaccines were available to anyone 12 years of age or older. Parental or guardian permission was required for children under 18 to receive vaccines. The clinic was performed in coordination with the Community Health Center of Central Missouri. The center provided its mobile examination room and a medical assistant who administered the injections.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America has been a Microsoft partner for 20 years. More information about the partnership and the program is available at bgca.org.

Microsoft has donated over $ 150 million in software, club services, Xbox consoles, Minecraft masks, COVID-19 relief, immunization support, cash grants and employee time to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and to local clubs to ensure our young people are safe and ready for the future, ”says the national club’s website. “This support has helped build club technology centers nationwide, enabled Boys & Girls Clubs of America to develop a suite of computer programs that boost skill levels, and supported the launch of the platform.” My.Future. ”

Young people can earn digital badges and recognition through My Future, which uses educational resources to teach children basic computational thinking, advanced coding, game design and application development.

The company donated 1,725 consoles to hard-hit communities this summer, helping to raise awareness and educate about vaccinations.

Wade Middaugh, the club’s general manager, said he was not concerned about the low turnout. Even though only one person was vaccinated, it was another small step towards herd immunity.

“We made sure that we really announced this to our parents. We launched the incentive to donate Xboxes, ”Middaugh said. “We thought we’ll see who rolls.”
