The Nintendo Switch The console has been Nintendo’s primary focus for five years now, and it continues to be a powerful force in the gaming industry. Its user interface, however, has not seen a major refresh since its launch, prompting some fans to create their own UI redesign concepts.

Nintendo Switch, Nintendo’s hybrid home and handheld console, launched long before the Xbox Series X and PS5, is still incredibly popular because of its exclusives and new features. That said, its user interface has always been limited to two simple options: a dark theme and a light theme.

Reddit user porcorousseauu has created a beautifully rendered interface that retains the same basic structure but changes things up to be more visually appealing than a plain background and boxes. The “Show All” button is moved to the top left instead of the end of the games list, providing easier access, and the background changes from a flat color to a blurry, colored surface that reminds you of something. little user interface of the PS5. Other than adding folders and moving a few things around, refreshing doesn’t change much, but it’s probably for the best as it would still look familiar to longtime users.

Despite the new ideas included, porcorousseauu is not the first to create a new user interface concept; In April 2021, another user uploaded a similar Switch UI design which, while showing significant differences, shows that fan demand for an updated UI is not isolated. Unlike the easy-to-navigate and visually appealing user interfaces of the Wii U and 3DS, the Switch’s current design mostly uses colors and flat icons, stripping it of any distinct style.

Before the Nintendo Switch Pro rumors culminated in the OLED Switch, some fans were hoping Nintendo would officially update the UI to allow for more customization. Currently, the only line of recently played games it offers doesn’t even allow users to create folders or categories, a feature that is present in one form or another on its two main competitors. This seemingly basic feature would be useful for organizing large game libraries into smaller categories.

The massive popularity of the Nintendo Switch comes despite major issues extending beyond the user interface. Even years later, many users are still struggling with the dreaded Joy-Con drift. While rumors suggest that Nintendo may soon remedy the drift, Nintendo’s lack of action can be understandably frustrating. Nintendo’s resistance to fan ideas also means that if a UI design is in the works, it probably doesn’t look anything like what fans expect. Still, the work of this fan deserves to be appreciated.
