Bethesda's Pete Hines apologizes for Starfield exclusivity

The rumors are finally confirmed: Starfield will not be coming to Playstation, and will only be released on Xbox and PC instead. The news comes after months of speculation following Microsoft’s acquisition of Zenimax Media, Bethesda’s parent company, in March. After having had our first look at Starfield During the Xbox E3 press conference, this news came as a shock to many Playstation users who expected the major title to release on all platforms. It’s not the only exclusivity coming to the system either. Red drop, Arkane Studios’ new co-op vampire shoot-em-up, is also coming exclusively to Xbox. It’s also more than possible that the highly anticipated Elder Scrolls VI could take the same path and go through Playstation users.

Playstation is no stranger to console exclusives and always offers some of the best exclusive experiences out there. With major titles like Rachet and Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, Final Fantasy XVI, and the anonymous God of the war sequel, the PS5 has more than enough exclusivity to show off. However, Bethesda is a major developer and PS5 owners fear they won’t have the chance to enjoy the next big titles coming out soon.

In response to upset players, Pete Hines publicly apologized for the game’s exclusivity during an interview. Check out his apologies below.

I don’t know how to allay the fears and worries of PlayStation 5 fans other than to say, well, I am also a PlayStation 5 gamer and have played games on this console and there are games that i will keep playing play on it, but if you want to play starfield, pc and xbox, sorry. All I can really say is “I’m sorry,” because I’m sure it’s frustrating for people. But I can’t do much about it.

As unfortunate as it may be for Playstation users, Todd Howard would still be convinced that this move will bring “more games to more people” according to Kotaku. He also promised that it would help “streamline development” to create a better product overall since Bethesda only has to worry about developing a single version of the game instead of separate versions for Xbox and Playstation.

Despite these controversies, Starfield is still shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of 2021. You can follow Starfield’s development here on Mxdwn.
