2021 has been a mixed bag for the game, with many assumptions and hopes for this year that have proven to be inaccurate time and time again. Lots of delays, disappointing game launches, and releases that weren’t what audiences were hoping for were seen throughout the year. Quality launches seemed scarce this year, and many opinions about the game in previous years have been proven to be incorrect.
The previous years have been some of the most difficult in game development. The COVID-19 pandemic has strained the industry, affecting everything from development schedules causing delays, to the continued low stock of PS5 and Xbox consoles. Being home more often than ever has only magnified the problems, as the demand for new games increases along with the difficulty of developing and releasing those games.
In late 2019 and 2020, the world saw several game rumors swirling across media platforms and major game announcements made by developers. The hype generated for things like new console variants and long-awaited games such as Cyberpunk 2077 in previous years have been significantly reduced. The reality ended up being that many of these highly anticipated hardware components and games wouldn’t exist in the way gamers had hoped, and the fact that many gamers were absolutely certain in 2020 no longer rings quite true.
Nintendo Switch OLED wasn’t the upgrade gamers wanted
The Nintendo Switch was a major hit, surpassing the NES in lifetime sales and almost matching lifetime sales of the Wii this year. While gamers have seen some of the best Switch games in 2021, some gamers have noted that the Switch has relatively weaker hardware compared to contemporary consoles such as the Xbox and PlayStation console lines. As the console entered its fourth year on the market in 2021, rumors began to appear about a potentially updated Nintendo Switch system with more powerful hardware and 4K graphics capabilities.
Many believed that this new Nintendo Switch would follow in the footsteps of its portable predecessor, the 3DS. The 3DS saw a budget alternative in the 2DS, and later the New Nintendo 3DS line, with better hardware and additions such as a second C-stick to control the camera. Rumors and alleged leaks during this time have claimed that Nintendo will announce a new Nintendo Switch 4K model, with many of these rumors claiming a “Nintendo Switch Pro” as a working title. This turned out to be wrong, however, when the announcement of a new console was the Nintendo Switch OLED model, which while offering a better screen and a new white color for the console, did not have more powerful hardware, and is considered a “sidegrade” by Nintendo rather than the next generation Nintendo Switch that many gamers were hoping for.
Cyberpunk 2077 was not the game it was marketed under
Cyberpunk 2077 had very high hopes throughout its development cycle. Announced since 2012, with trailers at E3 2018 and 2019, the game has generated a lot of hype since the time that elapsed between the announcement and any form of announced release date. Located in the Cyberpunk world of table games and with incredibly customizable features Cyberpunk characters, a living and living world, multiple movement options and character classes, Cyberpunk 2077 asserted itself as the future of video games.
Unfortunately, the game suffered a lot of delays, going from a release date in 2019 and eventually ending with a release date in late 2020. Players were unhappy, with small groups even sending death threats to the developers, but a lot. were understanding, hoping the extra time spent on the game would help make it even better when it was released. Upon release, however, the game received a lot of criticism because it felt unfinished, with plenty of bugs and performance issues on every console. Cyberpunk 2077 released on.
While many games face buggy builds that can be quickly fixed with post-launch fixes, the bugs that Cyberpunk 2077 launched with were much more severe, with the game’s removal from the PlayStation online store and a class action lawsuit against Cyberpunk 2077 launched for failing to meet expectations for the biggest game of the year, as well as the developer downplaying if the game was ready before launch. Anyone who is wholeheartedly excited for Cyberpunk 2077 throughout 2020 faced disappointment at the end of the year.
Many games expected in 2021 postponed to 2022
Much of the disappointment in the gaming industry throughout 2021 is due to the many gaming delays seen. The COVID-19 pandemic has put a strain on game development. Working from home has put a strain on productivity as file sharing and receiving support are now at the mercy of internet speeds, which can slow development dramatically. Despite a rather understandable problem for many, it cannot be denied that players who feel excited about the releases of many titles in 2021 are disappointed that the wait is extended into next year.
Cyberpunk 2077 The first free DLC has been pushed back from 2021 to 2022 this year as the developers want to focus more on fixing the game. Harry potter fans were disappointed when the open world game was set in the Harry Potter universe Hogwarts Legacy has been postponed to 2022. The same goes for the Lord of the Rings fans with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, an infiltration game set in Middle-earth, postponed from vacation 2021 to 2022. PlayStation fans looking for a new racing game for their new PlayStation 5 consoles will also have to wait until 2022, because Gran Turismo 7 was delayed until March 2022, also initially expecting a 2021 release date. And, perhaps most devastating of all, God of war 2 has been delayed until 2022, which means the sequel to the critically acclaimed game won’t continue until the New Year. It’s fair to say that anyone hoping for new titles in 2021 has had at least one game pushed back.
Despite the challenges brought by 2020 and 2021, 2022 could be the best gaming year players have seen in a long time. With several of the titles delayed this year to finally see release, in addition to long-awaited games like Starfield, Gears 6, Path of Exile 2, and more, gamers will have something to look forward to. It’s like knowing that a new console has to be announced, games with a lot of hype should be as good as the marketing says they are, and the expectations for games released on the originally announced release date will never go away, but hopefully 2021 has taught players to stay realistic while maintaining the hype that these announcements bring.
